Updates to the text
The new Chapter 17, Infectious Disease and Public Health, now includes discussions on patterns of infection, reservoirs, modes of transmission, and portals of entry. We also include public health topics such as emerging and reemerging diseases, zoonotic infections, and the role of anthropogenic factors, cultural factors, and public health measures in the emergence and spread of infectious disease.
The new Chapter 18, Immunization and Vaccines, highlights recent advances in vaccine development and expands discussion on the many vaccine formulations, designs, and additives and their advantages and disadvantages. An expanded section on vaccine development highlights basic research, correlates of protection, the testing and approval process, and the logistical and socio-cultural considerations required of vaccination programs.
The revised Chapter 13, Barrier Immunity: The Immunology of Mucosa and Skin, now includes a section on The Immune System of the Respiratory Tract. Both Chapter 13 and Chapter 14, The Immune Response in Space and Time, use SARS-CoV-2 as an example of how the immune system responds to a viral infection.
Five new feature boxes provide additional detail on pandemic-related topics:
